This is why my coworkers were extremely surprised when they found out I was getting married. Men and women marry for all sorts of reasons. Some are deeply in love, some have been divorced, and others are simply looking for companionship. But I know many others who got married for the sole purpose of increasing their ability to send their children to college. When I was in my 20’s, my motivation was a relatively easy thing to come by. I was just one of the first people in my family to attend college. I quickly learned that the two big reasons that people were marrying were 1) to increase their wealth and 2) to produce more children. While I was thrilled to be going to college, I couldn’t help but think about my future. Would I be able to continue to earn enough money to send my children to college? What if I became pregnant? I was not prepared to face these questions. I decided to look at the situation from a different perspective. I imagined myself in my 40’s. I would have been married for a few years, had at least two children, and be a proud grandparent. If I could achieve that goal, I might be able to justify getting married for the purpose of continuing to send my children to college. I was sure this was a ridiculous way to think, but if you really think about it, many people are getting married for this very reason. There are probably a lot of people who are happily married that have never thought about the fact that they are in a marriage for the sake of sending their children to college. However, after talking to many people who were married in the past 20 years, it’s clear that their motives have shifted somewhat. In the past, many men and women got married in order to produce children. The thought was that once they produced a child, they would have children as a “set and forget” situation. This was the standard thinking of the 60’s and 70’s. The problem with this thinking is that it is both very difficult and expensive to have children. In fact, many of my friends, who were married in the 60’s, said that getting married for the purpose of having children was like getting married for the purpose of moving to a colder climate, when you actually wanted to move to a warmer climate.
